Microsoft was starting to look like they'd changed their ways, like they were going to compete on the merits of their software, not on the premise of litigating everyone else out of business. The large majority of these patents have prior art and never should have been granted, others are common sense.

This is a very offensive move from MS against a HUGE community of open source users, including you. Check out William Hurley's article about what the world would be like without open source software if you don't believe me. MS is grasping at straws here, and It's certainly not going to win them any PR.

200 patents is only the tip of the iceberg that they even own. Litigation? That's what they are for. I know lots of people in the software /new media industry who think the same exact way.

It's all about the Benjamins and always will be. IBM owns one of the worlds largest patent portfolios and I'm sure open source infringes alot of theirs as well.

This will backfire on them in so many ways. SOOO many ways.

Microsoft... don't even go there, you will regret it.

Can anyone here recall a recent similar case that backfired on the initiator?

Patents are intended to protect inventors of something both original and nonobvious. Specifically in America, patents not intended to line the pockets of the "first to file".

That said, the patent process is broken, and far too many patents are approved too easily on things which are common sense to anyone working in the field. I'd put money on the fact that most of what MS has won't stand up in court as nonobvious, and that there is prior art for most of the claims as well.

In the meantime, we've got the specter of fear, uncertainty, and doubt about linux being spread from MS again.

Microsoft is trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Microsoft, open source, and the net in general are instruments, and can only be used to achieve an end.
They are not an end in themselves. People don't like being given a choice, and then have the choice taken away from them by an arbitrary decision. If they are not given a choice, necessity, will compel them to create one. Don't confuse copyright (which is held by artists, musicians, writers, etc) with Patents, they are two totally different animals. A patent is meant to "prevent others from making, using or selling the patented invention". It does not give you the right to any money, it keeps others from making money off of your hard work. More on Patents, Copyright and Trademarks here.

Corporations were originally designed to service people's needs, not the reverse. I often make the mistake of making a blanket comment, without researching an exact definition or distinction.
Law exists, can be enforced, and there are means to change it if, it becomes unusable, outdated, or impractical. The law cannot keep up with the dynamic nature of the internet, because it can tend to be too specific, and a change can take a number of years to enact.
The internet has allowed people's imaginations to go on line.
Any content that seems worthy of protecting, will be no match for the fountain of new ideas to emerge. The way we think is changing, and our ability to both accept, and submit new ...

Forget open source, how many of IBM's patents do you figure MS infringes upon? MS could be cutting off their nose to spite their face.
