It's time to start pushing back against the bogus "tax reform" arguments. If you live in society you benefit from society, and you should pay your dues.

More:
In hunting and foraging cultures, the proportional tax rate is so high, said Dr. Bowles, that “even the Swedes would be impressed.”

Take the case of the Ache tribe of Paraguay. Hunters bring their bounty back to a common pot. “The majority of calories are redistributed,” he said. “It ends up being something like a 60 percent income tax.”

Pastoral and herding societies tend to be less egalitarian than foraging cultures, and yet, here, too, taxing is often used to help rectify extreme inequities. When a rich cattle farmer dies among the Tandroy of southern Madagascar, Dr. Bowles said, “The rich person’s stock is killed and eaten by everyone,” often down to the last head of cattle. “That’s a 100 percent inheritance tax.”

In a society like the US where most of the taxes go to national defense,it is questionable whether or not it is for the benefit of the whole. I wonder what the net income of the author is. If he is underpaid, then I am sure this article will look very good in his portfolio when it comes time to evaluate who will or will not be getting a raise.

13 million children in this country go to bed without a meal, so the food argument is out the window.

It's true our tax expenditures are misappropriated.

The solution is to properly appropriate the expenditures.

There are many of us pushing for that to happen.

I believe this article is pointing out that we are not doing the best job we could be doing.

Cut the defense spending by 70%, and the US will not only be able to pay for everything with lower taxes, but the massive debt that the Republicans ran up would be gone before your children's time, and the US will have a sensibly-sized military that won't tempt hot-dog cowboy Republican presidents to declare war willy-nilly to feed the bottomless military-industrial complex.

I don't think it's accurate either to make a blanket statement that nothing is done.

It is true that we are coming out of a 30 year period of conservative baloney set off with Ronald Reagan. And yes that has been clear to many of us, but unfortunately not the majority of us.

You won't change that in the 12 weeks President Obama has been in office.

It appeared that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates budget this year was a step in the right direction where many bloated programs were scraped.

Is that why they are increasing the Pentagon budget, to scrape bloated programs? It is a game of bait and switch.

As citizens, there is no doubt about our obligation toward taxes--PAY THEM--and that means our FAIR share as members of a community that share in the many benefits of that community.
Too many Americans want a free ride. They want safe freeways and schools and libraries and parks and police and fire departments but they don't wanna dig into their own pockets to pay for them.
Well, guess what? Community doesn't work that way.

And we also pay taxes for the right to protest against what we feel is wrong, so taxes are an inevitable part of freedom.

Sometimes it depends on what measuring stick you are using. If you use absolute dollars then spending generally increases with the natural increase in inflation. If you measure as a percentage of the U.S. GDP you see some periods where there are more responsible administrations and spending as a percentage of GDP decreases. The Clinton administration was one of those periods.

In constant dollars we are spending about the same as during the Korean and Vietnam wars. I do believe if we had a Clinton or Obama Administration instead of Bush Administration we would not be fighting the wars we are now in and spending would be even less.

If you believe President Obama's administratio...
