The war was not about state's rights. That is freaking sham. The Civil War was about slavery. If you don't believe me, then read each state's formal declaration of secession. The concept of slavery in the 1800s was the primary grounding for the development of progressivism. Progressivism took off around the 1880s and was fully entrenched in western society by the 1920s. The materialist ideology behind slavery is the same materialist movement that exists today. As for the Confederate flag, it represents the same thing to me as the Mussolini fascista symbol of the axe bound up by rods (which can be found on the back of our Liberty Dime, minted in the 20s), the swastika, the hammer and sickle, ACORN, and Obama. Here are some flags that represent state's rights. Won't even go here other than to say we have an old Confederate Flag that belonged to my MIL who's father was 9 when the Yankees marched up the St. Marks river to take the Capital. Only the old, young, and women were left to defend the city. Fortunately it wasn't Sherman who lead the campaign. I agree with Willhelm. For the record, I'm a huge fan of Lincoln and his policies I took Wilhelm's advice and read all of the (very long, sheesh) declarations of secession. At the most basic level, it appears that the war was fought by the Northern states to preserve the union, and fought by the Southern states to protect themselves from the North after having exercised their right to secede from the Union.
