What he says is not true - Basically - after stabilizing the kernel, Supporting softwares have to be made equally rugged.
Because if supporting utils/tools are not rugged and user friendly, Adotability is gonna be a big time issue.
It does gives you freedom at cost of unstability. Thats not to discount what it does. But for Linux to reach masses rugged applications are must.

Having said that - Linux is not something new, Unix concept was always there, So If Mr. Linus thinks he is god of kernel - He might wanna think over. He didnt do Linux for humanity (as Ubuntu etc suggest) - It was just for learning which snowballed - coupled with efforts of other guys with same/similar interests.

BTW - I am not against Linux.
