When the hell with the U.S. public finally grow-up? Are there no more important situations going on in the world that who sleeps with whom? I was absolutely livid as I was watching CNN's "The Situation Room" when Wolf Blitzer interrupted a discussion he was having with a political journalist to announce that Gavin Newsom has admitted to having an affair with his former campaign manager's wife. Newsom himself is divorced. These are all adults capable of working out their own problems. Why in God's name should the public give a damn about their personal marital problems? With Iraq boiling over into Iran, and the world collapsing around us, we shouldn't even be the slightest bit concerned in this kind of tabloid journalism. I have written to CNN about this, and I hope others might do the same.

I was watching CNN at the same time this so called "breaking news" came across the screen. I was compelled to stay glued to the TV in anticipation of some serious situation in the Middle East........then came the nonsense about the Mayor's infidelity. What rediculous way for an advanced civilization to act! Seems to me, I remember the late 1990's with all the nonsense taking over the airwaves about celebrities, and about Clinton. Ken Starr and the republican majority Congress spent tons of time and money digging dirt with so much "detail" splattered all over the news and the internet. The public was entranced at the details! Meanwhile, off in the distance, the planning of what became 9...

In England we have a number of [comics cough] Newspapers, such as The Sun. Tits on almost every page. Unfortunatly titilation is what the masses are feed. But do they really want it?!

The only real problem is that most people just don't seem to give a damn. They tune in to this kind of news programs and drool with anticipation over the next salacious report they can get their eyes and ears on. Of course, the media have clued into this a feed the craving with more and more of this shit.

Here in Canada, our news shows are far from perfect. But one thing I can say is that news is news. Who's boinking whom is of no real interest to people. A few months ago, one of our most well-known female members of Parliament was accused by a hockey players wife of having an affair with her husband. This was mentioned somewhere in the middle of one newscast and never mentioned again....

I have to disagree with you zasel. It's a good story, and there is a certain level of human drama involved--a mayor sleeps with the wife of his friend & top aide.

Plus, it looks like the wife was also a subordinate to the mayor at the time (she was his appointments secretary, although I am not totally sure she was at the time of the affair). That to my mind definitely makes it an issue of public relevance.

Sure, the story could be overplayed, but I don't that happened here.

Public relevance perhaps, jklugman, but "breaking news" of the urgent variety?

My complaint was not that the news was reported, but simply that it was hyped as something that required our immediate attention, and was so important that it took precedence over whatever else was being discussed at the moment.

I just think the news in the U.S. could use a little balance and prioritizing. I personally can also enjoy a slightly salacious or "juicy" story, but not to the extent that it should be considered of urgent and rapt attention.

Perhaps, I've been living in Canada too long, and I've become to staid in my tastes.

zasel, I'll grant you it's not breaking news by any definition, but Huffington's piece reads as if she is saying this shouldn't have been reported at all.

Yes, jklugman, I can see your point. She did kinda crap all over the entire story. I guess I wouldn't go that far. My main complaint, as I mentioned earlier, was the urgency with which the news was reported. So, it seems we are both on the same page with this one.
