wow. I can NOT believe she was convicted in this case. I'm confident it will get thrown out in the appeals process, but sometimes our legal system amazes me. It's extremely likely that she was the victim of spyware and popups, and even if not, doesn't the prosecution have to prove her guilty of deliberately seeking out pornography on the computer? Teacher = scapegoat for all of society's failings towards children. Prosecution = sensationalist hungry idiots with nothing better to do than waste peoples time and money. Children = subject of pornography embedded deep in their minds. An incident which would have been forgotten within a few weeks, but as usual morality crazed halfwits who seem hell bent on making examples out of anyone who might make a genuine 'human' mistake. Mind you, the teacher should have just pulled the plug, no matter how important it was that the machine was left on. Or would we just be sitting here reading an article on a teacher facing jail for deleting records of students achievements? If her story is true, the 'permanent' teacher should be able to corroborate her testimony, along with the students (although the weight of their testimony might not be exactly credible). It doesn't say whether she immediately seeked assistance from school's IT support people to fix the problem.. if she didn't - that's certainly a strike against her. Also, what level of expertise she has using computers and the Internet, nor what the school policies are in regards to filtering, spyware blocking and pop-up controls. She certainly could be innocent... or she may not be, it's just too hard to say from the article. I certainly don't have any problems with popups or see ANY porn on my machin... You can find out much more about this in PCWorld and PC Magazines. I first became aware of it in Steve Bass' (Tips & Tweaks, PCWorld) newsletter, in which there are many helpful links. Julie Amero's husband has started a blog, through Bloggers, where there's more info and a way to donate towards her legal fees; this one I found through PC Magazine's John Dvorak's column. Sorry, you'll have to look them up on your own- hey, wait a minute! Maybe I can Clip them for you! ( Actually didn't think of it till just now! )... Been following this in the local papers. A complete travesty. |
