There is only one problem I see with the Republicans going down big. The Democrats. The Dems have unfortunately adopted the Karl Rove theory of politics. Pander to the base, the middle will split and you will win. In the 06 election the Dems took more of the Middle. They did so by gaining more moderate candidates, a lot of whom were fiscal conservatives, and some of whom are fed up republicans. In a presidential year, unless the dems can continue to gain the middle, they won't get much further. The monster is not just a republican monster, look the other way and he might turn democratic. Bankrupt philosophy does not corrupt, power corrupts and the monster is a product of that power.

Remember the last time the dems came to real power en masse? When the middle was fed up with Richard Nixon. Holding the center is the hard part of politics, and therefore the thing from which consultants like Rove shy away. Holding the center, and avoiding the corruption of power is the only way a party can gain a lasting foothold, and that is damn near impossible.
