Part of the book, entitled ‘Processus contra Templarios’, relies on a discovery bound to excite everyone who has ever worked through an archive of material and dreamt of making a big find: while examining the Vatican Secret Archive Professor Barbara Frale found a document which had been misfiled in the seventeenth century. <P> The document concerns the trial of the Knights Templar, which historians have long believed saw the knights found guilty and condemned for heresy. However, according to the find – known as the Chinon parchment – the Pope at the time conceded that the Knights were not guilty of blasphemy, even though they had an initiation ceremony that involved spitting on the cross.
