Doc Rock is a shy, but intellectually arrogant scientist who has a surprisingly vulnerable humanity. His assistant, J, is a robot who is part child, part teenager, part pop culture groupie and part philosopher/poet. At times J would seem to be the more human of the two. They are co-workers, room-mates and most of all, friends though I doubt either would ever admit the latter.
