I think the vast majority of people think of the native americans as very noble dignified and with a strong connection to the earth and spirituality

The Native American "harmony with nature" had a high price. It was their ancestors who caused the extinction of dozens of species through overhunting - the large mammals, American species of horses and camels and so on. As a result, there were no animals of any size left to domesticate and use as beasts of burden, with which they might have developed technologies better able to resist European incursion.
