alanocu says: Americans are feeling the pain of spiking prices at the gas pump more acutely than citizens in other countries because they've become accustomed to cheap fuel and large cars, experts say. It's not cheap. Its not really the price of gas as much as it is the steep rise of it. There isn't a chance to level off and get used to the change before it hikes higher. We are a rich nation and can afford the prices but the steep climb is what is killing our spirit. If wages were climbing just as quickly you would see much less complaining. It's so cheap, it hurts. It hurts because it is SHARP It also hurts because people are driving around in Chevy Suburbans, Nissan Armadas, Toyota Sequoias, Ford Expeditions, Cadillac Escalades, and Range Rovers. I take the bus, plus I don't need to seat 9 adults when I'm driving. And this isn't my argument - this is CNN's article - voice your complaints with them! Chevy Suburbans, Nissan Armadas, Toyota Sequoias, Ford Expeditions, Cadillac Escalades, and Range Rovers.Ah, the ole keeping up with the Jones routine. Pretty shallow eh? dunno what that means.....the Jones routine what is that giant SUV looking vehicle; sort of looks like a tank? Someone parked one of those on my street the other day - in Boston - the damn thing was so big I couldn't believe it; no one needs a car much bigger than a Ford Pinto in this city - the streets are narrow and compact.....ridiculous... the Jones routine"Keeping up with the Jones" Refers to the suburbian mentality that if your neighbor buys something or does something to his home or the like, you are compelled to sally forth with your own purchase bigger and better than his. Doesn't matter how high gas prices go, it is still cheaper for me to have one vehicle that meets my needs (in my case, a dodge 1500 crew cab with a V6) than it is to own multiple vehicles that I could use depending on my needs. The article also points out the varying distances people drive, the public transportation options available...depending a where you live.... (depending on where you live) I'll try to remember how cheap our gas is when I pay the $50 plus dollars to fill up my tank! I live on a social security income ... so gas ain't cheap! what is that giant SUV looking vehicle; sort of looks like a tank?alanocu ... I think that you mean a Hummer. It's a military vehicle that has been modified for civilian use. I totally agree with you here! I can't think of very many people in the world that would need transportation that huge. I see mommys and a few kids, or a man and a few buddies get out of these monsters. What a waste!! What always gets me is that the European version of the same car rocks on gas mileage. I was looking at some cars and the U.S. Ford Focus got what 35 mpg or something while the European version got somewhere between 40-60? Dang, give me the European version. a Hummer! that's the one! thanks Marcareil! Imagine paying $10 a gallon. Well, we will be paying over 10 Rand a litre as of next month. It takes almost 400 Rand to fill my tank. You'd be crying in your breakfast cereal if you had to pay that in US Dollars. The tragedy is that we have an enormous unemployment problem and no social security system and the poor are truly poor. With increases in petroleum come the increases in food prices. I ride my bike or take the bus. of course, not everybody could do that, but a lot could if they tried. We are a spoiled nation. |
