Reddingsteams hebben geen overlevenden gevonden, zo melden Amerikaanse media. De piloot heeft kort voor de crash nog een noodsignaal gegeven. Ooggetuigen zagen het vliegtuig zes minuten na de start neerstorten in het meer. Het vliegtuig was geleasd door de University of Michigan. Toen bekend werd dat het vliegtuig gecrasht was, zijn de voorbereidingen van de transplantatie gestaakt.
