A <A href="http://solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/SunspotCycle.shtml">solar cycle</A> is caused by the changing <A href="http://solar.physics.montana.edu/YPOP/Spotlight/Magnetic/what.html">magnetic field</A> of the Sun, and varies from <A href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_maximum">solar maximum</A>, when <A href="http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap051106.html">sunspot</A>, <A href="http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070206.html">coronal mass ejection</A>, and <A href="http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap071106.html">flare phenomena</A> are most frequent, to solar minimum, when such activity is relatively infrequent.
