This is shocking. And what language is this: "...the epidemic in this country is stable"? When is an epidemic stable?

The country went nuts when a guy got on a plane with TB. Would you want to be informed if you were attending college with someone who had smallpox? Aren't parents still informed when a child in class has head lice or pink-eye?

The disease is spreading because no one dares to say that the public should know about a persons STDs. And with promiscuity commonplace, ignorance creates the pool for this to flourish and threaten the innocent.

The politically correct people in this country did an injustice to everyone in forbidding disclosure of who is HIV positive. They care more about protecting one's sexual orientation than life itself. Since one common way it is spread is associated with the gay lifestyle, it's a private topic, no matter of it's deadly consequence. If every we start treating HIV like the deadly disease it really is and forget about maybe embrassing a segment of the population, maybe we can get a handle on it.

It's ultimately the *receiver's* responsibility to protect themselves. How can anyone who has ever heard mention of the word HIV or AIDS ever have unprotected sex?? Do they feel invincible? Or don't think that AIDS kills because of advances in treatment? (No cure.) Ignorance or arrogance? Baffling.

Since one common way it is spread is associated with the gay lifestyle,
During the eighties the one thing which did most damage in respect of the spread of the disease was the idea that it was only gay people that had this problem, and of course in sexual relations the easiest way to contract HIV is through unprotected anal sex, which of course gay people indulge in.

But what was not considered was that by sheer weight of numbers, there are more heterosexual people indulging in this kind of sex than there are gay people , by a long long way.

The outcome was inevitable, especially considering the way it was being portrayed as just a "gay thing", and of course many of the he...

My case in point....

A young man engaged in a relationship with another man in college. He later explained it as a 'passing phase'. He married and he and his wife became Christians. They had twins boys. Within a year the mother began to have strange symptoms and was diagnosed with HIV AIDS. Her husband had contracted the disease, unknowingly, and passed it on to his wife who died within 4 yrs. When I last heard, the father had begun to show signs of the disease but not the boys.

No one knew...until the damage was done.

I must also say that i find it sad that the problem is still being used by the anti-gay community to serve their own agenda
I have never believed HIV to be simply a gay issue, it's just been a part, as well as multiple partners, and addicts sharing needles to the few cases where people contracted it through transfusions of tainted blood.

HIV is so rampant now, I do not see us ever defeating it short of a cure or everyone getting tested and have the results available to anyone to view via an internet database. My main point is whether it's gays, addicts, prostitutes or adulterous mates, we need to focus on the whole population instead of concentrating on offending a fe...

Of course having the whole population tested would certainly be a step forward in that it enlightens those that are at present unaware of their HIV status, and this was something i was keen on right from the start.

Having that information information on an internet databse is really quit pointless considering that the day after you are tested your HIV status can change, and in the end it will just be used by those that would discriminate, eg, insurance companies, employers, anti gay groups etc...

have the results available to anyone to view via an internet database.
Not only would there be the abuse and "updating" problems described by michaellll, the majority (95% ?) of the world, doesn't have access to the internet.

A site like that would also have to assume, that people are going to check each other before engaging in any sexual activity. I think that's naive to assume.

"Two secs honey, just let me go HIVoogle you."

Naah, I don't think it would work.

First we need not worry about it actually working since the powers to be in this country would not think about identifying those infected. People would still practice their sexual way of life regardless if their lives were at stake, which they are. However if those that were HIV positive could be ID'ed it just might save a few from becoming infected.

The sad nature of Aids is the virus takes so long before the infected person realizes he/she is infected. This lag before symtoms become apparent allows for further transmission of the virus to their partners and the partners of thei...

but realistically, there are some who knowing they are HIV positive and in essence sentenced to death would want to take as many with them as possible.
Of course there are always going to be a few bad apples, that is why no matter what you do, the ONLY thing that will protect you is your own common sense when having sexual relations, and as hard as it may seem those that understand and disregard the well known risks have at the end only themselves to blame if they become infected.

As i said the only people who have the power to stop the spread of HIV in it's tracks, is us.

I do agree with you, however you can get infected unknowingly by a spouse or partner who is not as loyal as you may think, which happens all to much nowadays. A husband or wife' greatest fear should be having an extra marital affair, contracting the disease and passing it unknowingly to their spouse.

Health care professionals and law enforcement are also in a precarious situation due to to the large amount of HIV positive people they encounter, so people can get infected innocently, without having sex with anyone. However I beleive as you do that most cases could be preven...
