Hmm. I am all for protecting the vulnerable, but this smells a little too much like censorship, to me What else could or would governments decide to deem "harmful information"? Do I trust they always would have my best interests at heart, if they get to decide what we can read or not? In my opinion, the causes of suicide largely lie offline, not on. If we want to reduce suicide, look to answer the questions why first, now how. "Guns don't kill people", and neither do webpages.

the Government wants to encourage ISPs to direct
people who are trying to access suicide sites to alternative sites
Redirecting people away from the sites "they" deem undesirable is a form of censorship!

This reminds me of an huge sign in a very prominant place on the highway in Atlanta, Georgia, USA that said something about being pregnant and needing help. Thinking this was about abortion many women called and went to this place where they were shown a video about abortion called "The Silent Scream" (a very graphic film about abortion) and subjected to over-eager Christian philosophy about abortion, instead of getting the sympathetic counseling and information they were se...

I have known those who have survived the suicide of a loved one, and have lost a much admired friend as well. Beyond the condolences on your loss, my thanks for your strength in your comment, Marcariel, and your wisdom. I totally agree with your observation that if someone wants to they will find a way. At the same time, I do believe in the right of an individual to end his or her own life and I am mindful of the concern of the "slippery slope" in that belief. I am suspect that, just as we have with so many attitudes before, the baby-boomers will be changing the way society sees the question when there are not enough resources available for reasonable care of us as we age. It is a thorny iss...

Wow,
This is a really difficult subject for me TN. At the core of my being it really bothers me to see websites like this even though I believe it is the individuals right to read anything they want; it still bothers me deep down and hurts me that there are so many people suffering in the world. So much pain TN; too much for me sometimes, but I think you are correct in your comments. I still wish there wasn't a need or interest in the websites though as naive as that sounds

We all grow up in a world that loves us and cares for us. A world where we are the focus of appreciation and awe.
Then we go out into the real world and find it a cold, impersonal and often deadly place where nobody cares about 'YOU' anymore. You find that your hopes and dreams and plans are crushed and nobody else really cares. You find that the morals and standards that you thought were a given are just puffs of wishful thinking as you struggle to live day to day. If you don't work, you dont get paid. No pay means no money, no place to live and no food.
Children should not be shut off from the reality of life. Many parents don't include their children in the bill paying process or the rea...

Sadly, most of what you say is true Skwril.

nobody cares
That's a big concept. Trouble with it is that once in a while somebody does care.
I live for those moments.

I think my Mom once told me that life only gets more difficult and if she would have known that when she was a child she didn't know if whe could have gone on. In some ways, that is so true. We all tend to maximize our bad experiences and minimize our good ones.

Why is that? I'll be the media has a lot to do with that kind of thinking. They tend to focus on the worst news the most.

If you say to someone 'You want the good news or the bad news" More often they will choose the bad news first.

Wouldn't it be more effective to study the young to desire to commit suicide? It does not seem to me the kind of info one looks up lightly and unfortunately we don't need the Net to do it. It is by now a common solution. Don't deal with problems - hide them, supress them, pretend they don't exist
