…rats will choose to stay high and whacked out all of the time if they are trapped in solitary confinement, but they don't like being dopey when they are in a better environment…Rats have their own agenda, and it doesn't include being locked up alone in a steel cage in a laboratory, pressing a lever…most humans are like that too. It is an old stereotype that it is the poorest people, in the slums and ghettos, who stay drunk or stoned all day long…Most people, in better environments, don't really want to stay doped out all of the time…try a few thought experiments…a guy is locked in solitary confinement…he doesn't even know for how long, or if he will ever get out, and there is plenty of alcohol and dope available…Does he use?…enough to get obliterated? Probably.

…a guy is locked up in a big luxurious hotel suite with the entire Swedish bikini ski team. Again, the full supply of alcohol and drugs is also available…Does he stay obliterated all of the time? Highly unlikely.

You would not choose an intense relationship with a substance if healthy relationships with people were possible.

I have not had opportunity to test the Swedish bikini ski team theory, but it sounds plausible.
I have been preaching through the gospel of Mark lately, trying to tell the stories and not inflict any more theological prejudice upon them than I can help. And what has surprised me (there's always something that surprises me when I do this) is that so many of the healings Jesus does are about restoration back into community life - about mending the things that keep people separate from others, and giving them their lives back.
Seems so like your clip - we aren't made to be so wounded as to have to live in either self-forced or other-forced isolation.
Good stuff you gave us, thanks!

BTW, it's remarkably vivid language - all the way from Rat Park to Swedish Bikini Ski Team. That's quite a rhetorical distance!

good clip!
But the statistics don't are correct! I think, that only the deaths of alcohol intoxication in the USA must be higher! But the most deaths are by alcohol deseases.
There are much more deaths by alcohol than by tobacco!
1980 in the old West-Germany (before the wall was crashed) the rate was 60.000, without the rare deaths of traffic and the many of deseases, who die by later results of exzessive alc.use !
Only the victims of liver cirrhosis and similar deseases and those of alcohol intoxication!!
And LSD is the only nontoxic drug - there is no deadly dose. But people take substances, they are sold for LSD, but not are.
