I meant that masturbation would have been an easier way to get rid of his erection than to chop off his penis.

Imagine meditating after masturbating versus meditating after having just chopped off a part of your body.

I doubt that he endorses masturbation as a temporary fix though.

Masturbation ain't the only thing you do with a penis — you need it to, uh, dispose of bodily wastes too. I'd hate to know what he might do with his ass next... X_X

It should be mentioned that in the Pali canon, there is an instance of this exact thing occurring, at which time the Buddha says, "whosoever should cut off their sexual organ commits a grave offense." This action is condemned in Buddhism, and this monk unfortunately has acted from wrong view.
