masbury says:
"an absolute lie;" decline in violence brought on by three other factors. This is important - you'll hear it over and over between now and November. But will the MSM pick it up?

How can it be a myth?
I think I am apt to believe the surge is not working because of the intent of the terrorist militia and their knack for patience. The media shows no desire not to challenge the Bush Team.
1. American casualties are way down. plummeted actually.
2. British forces have retreated from Basra and Iraqi forces are putting down the insurgency on their own.
3. A growing percentage of Iraq is under slef-governance.
4. Terrorist attack are dow 80%
5. There is still the issue of Iran involvement on the border and in Basra, which is probably being allowed to happen so Bush can make a case to attack Iran.
6. The Democracy Now piece just appears to be applying the credit to someone...

The myth by the left is that the surge was only about sending in more troops. That is why they said it wouldn't work in the first place and now the claim is it wasn't the surge that caused the drop of violence in Iraq. The surge was not only an increase in troops, but a change of tactics. Violence is down, yet the left still tries to paint this as failure. They hung their hat on Iraq being a failure, and no matter how much the situation improves they must stick to their guns. This is just another panicked attempt to salvage an election that the left saw as and easy win a year ago and now they see it slipping away.

n2sooners - better read the whole article. It's not the American left that's speaking. The mission was not bringing down violence; the mission was opening a window of lower violence so Iraq's politicians could surge ahead. That simply didn't happen; the mission has now been re-defined as merely "bringing down violence."

Decreases in violence happened in Baghdad due to the ethnic cleansing of Sunnis from the area through mass migration, and in western Iraq due to the Sunnis taking money from the US to go after al Qaeda.

Neither of these elements were results of the surge.
