Having a sustainable growing systems guide and campaign called, International Year of the Potato.....
.A United Nations international year once actually meant something. The potato is already an integral part of the global food system. It is the world’s number one non-grain food commodity, with production reaching a record 325 million tonnes in 2007. Potato consumption is expanding strongly in developing countries, which now account for more than half of the global harvest and where the potato’s ease of cultivation and high energy content have made it a valuable cash crop for millions of farmers.
. In Peru, for example, the government has acted to reduce costly wheat imports by encouraging people to eat bread that includes potato flour. In China, the world's biggest potato producer, agriculture experts have proposed that potato

Potatoes are rich in carbohydrates, making them a good source of energy. They have the highest protein content (around 2.1 percent on a fresh weight basis) in the family of root and tuber crops, and protein of a fairly high quality, with an amino-acid pattern that is well matched to human requirements. They are also very rich in vitamin C - a single medium-sized potato contains about half the recommended daily intake - and contain a fifth of the recommended daily value of potassium.

@tanni...hi thanks for endorsement of them, I think there is recipes some where on site.I know in Peru they are doing big variety of ways of cooking them .I like mashed with onions, but plain boiled with butter quick guys cooking ha ha red ones ,forget name,(pontiac?) mind boggles at all the boutique varieties. I use old car tyre filled in with compost and they grow out of top quite happily not too many hassles, spray with pyrethrum to stop bugs eating, but good to grow own , when cupboard is bare, cheers.

I really like the genuine Yukon Gold. The potato even when cooked is a beautiful golden colour. Have you ever tried the french fry sandwich. Someone had a clip of the 10 best sandwiches and it was in there. I had one years ago. It's good with mayonnaise and fried onions. Love mashed potatoes and gravy. It's really hard to ruin potatoes. I'm going to try and grow some in my patio garden this summer.
