"This and subsequent research has led us to believe that the ability to delay gratification for better rewards in the future is a fundamental skill in success, probably because it looks at how emotions and motivations interact with a more rational appproach to reasoning. We know what's best, but can we keep temptation at bay to reach it?"

The article is a compelling exploration of this key ability and the subsequent research that has sprung up around it to help explain how we manage to keep those cheap instant hits at bay.

Oh, I think I'm having an ah ha experience. I've always been pretty good about putting off gratification. When I got to the part about how it was bad to stare at the marshmellow for 15 minutes, I thought about how I couldn't do that if I had to because I have ADD. With something like this, I'm wondering if the ADD has made it easier to put off gratification because my mind will just naturally go somewhere else and not concentrate on that particular gratification. Interesting. I'm always over joyed to find a positive side of something negative.
