In all of US history, there has been a total of only 125 elected representatives and senators who were black. Twenty-nine served during Reconstruction (all Republicans); the rest have served in the modern era (all Democrats). Today, there are only 40 black US Representatives (Wow! 11 more than in 1898! What progress!) and 1 black Senator. While blacks are 13% of the population, blacks hold only 7% of the seats in Congress. If Congress reflected the public, there would be 60 black representatives and 13 bla... Maybe they should not focus on running because they are black and focus on running because of their values.
