egsnyder says: Here in Ottawa, Canada, this it the PERFECT time for us to start thinking about ways to get rid of the lawn. In 2008, we all know that a monoculture, single species landscape is not self-sustaining. It needs TONS of inputs -- water, labor, fuel, fertilizer, pest and weed control, etc. What a waste! And for what? I tore out my entire back lawn last year and have a drought tolerant native plant garden, with lots of butterflies and hummingbirds making it home. What a treat! If only my property owners association would let me do it in the front yard.... I don't know why people are so attached to a patch of grass in their yard. That'e what neighbourhood parks are for. Yards should be an extension of your home, designed to be enjoyed. |
