cementedminds says: Do social networking sites work for the over 25s? I don't see why not. They work for me and I'm over 25. Perhaps I don't get the ten thousand comments a day I would get if I were a 16 year old on Bebo, but would I want them? And is it ageist to suggest that social networking is not for the over 25s? I love blogging, and I'm 43. My 51-yr-old husband blogs as well (though much more infrequently than I do). I have plenty of LiveJournal "friends" who are 30-50+. Have a MySpace page to network with my college daughter, and her friends who all know me are delighted to keep in touch. There we go! I can't be bothered with MySpace myself because I really can't stand all the friends requests from emo bands and the blinding profiles some people have but I like Facebook at a lot. And Bebo to a lesser extent. I'm not sure that Livejournal is really a social networking site, although it often has the same results. I wouldn't be without LJ. On MySpace, my profile comment "if you're a band or commerical enterprise, don't ask me to Friend you" seems to work for the most part. Also, I will automatically deny anyone whose graphics bring down my broadband (also noted in the profile). I've had a couple of folks revamp because I told them that. Never been to Facebook; I'm trying to cut down to places where I'll actually visit once in a while. I had that message on my MySpace too and it worked for a while but then they started ignoring it. I eventually deleted my profile because I was so sick of the whole thing. I find it amusing to see some of the "teens" that contact me on MySpace. It's worded almost cliche, TOO "teen." Wave at the nice police officer on the other end who's trying to see if the witch is on the level. That's hilarious!!! And well spotted! I'm 29 & am on orkut....haven't tried facebook or myspace yet...don't think i will.... |
