The issue with string theory is separating science from religion. Science can't prove or disprove the notion, so believers are derided for taking it on faith. That opens them to derision from their unconvinced brethren.

Dr Brian Cox on a brilliant BBC Horizon programme about gravity last night which ended with the search for the 'graviton', after explaining that its invisibility was possibly due to its disappearance into another dimension, said that if the viewer felt bewildered and confused etc. that was no different than how physicists feel. And, he said, the mystery is Beautiful.

I wanted to look it up on BBC's homepage, but that programme can only be viewed within the UK
