I am Irish--as pasty white as they come! and same goes in Thailand. When i visited there, ppl will just go OOOHHHH u have nice skin EVER... and i was nothing but PALE!!! Asking some of my thai friends they have this belief that ppl with white skins show that they are from good families as they dont have to work outdoor and therefore being so white. I'm not too sure about this trend anyway!!! This is a major thing in India...has been for a long time... There are lots of ads for skin whitening products here in the UAE as well.... My mum and aunts avoid the sun when they can, I never did understand why. Very true, Deepti, my mum's always getting stuff that'll get her skin fairer and I think she's pale enough as is...on the other hand, I like getting a tan...oh, the beach.... I think it's common for us here in Asia to want a fairer skin. However, we also know if they're fake or not. I find it funny for the lighter skinned Chinese and Japanese who wants paper white skin. We see the tragic results of skin lightening creams in South Africa every day. And the grand irony of it all is that most of us pasty-white people spend hours cultivating a darker skin tone at the cost of sunburn, heatstroke and skin cancer. Yeah, a lot of Filipinos want white skin, even if our top models are tan. People, more often than not, want what they don't have. Good point, michelle! Look at all the orange-y celebrities. I bet Michael Jackson is popular. My own family comes from South Asia where Bollywood movies are quite popular. Many of the Indian actresses have very light toned skin compared to most in India. And I always see advertisements on Indian channels about special creams that make your skin lighter. I never really understood what this crazy obsession with lighter skin in Asia is all about, It's all quite strange really... great comment at Michael Jackson!!! lol Well, I suppose that if you walk around in Europe with a "yellowish" skin hue, people may avoid you as being "jaundiced", but in CHINA? Either there are 100's of millions of jaudice sufferers there, or the "hue" is natural, in which case, leave it alone - it's different (maybe not in China, but elsewhere certainly). I'm white, except in Summer, when I tend to be "lobster red" but I don't pay anything for that colour. Incidentally, I've never seen any black person attacking his skin with bleach! Quite rightly so, some of the most beautiful people (male and female) in the world are black, or "coffee coloured" - I hope it stays that way! A Chinese friend of me tells me that China has traditionally favoured lighter skinned individuals. And Deepti's right, "beauty creams" are (were) all the craze in India.
