Listening to Bush answer these questions is painful.

WOW, hasn't this been an amazing day? I just heard Bush say he could work with the dems on raising minimum wage!! Imagine that!!

I just heard him say that too!

I'll say. The press conference has been incredibly revealing.

As Josh Marshall just pointed out, Bush admitted several times "he lied to the reporters in the pre-election conversation he had on Rumsfeld."

Bush's answer about that pre-election conversation sure was suspicious. He seemed awfully uncomfortable. He also didn't have a whole lot of conviction when saying that Cheney would be staying.

Bush said:

Somehow, it seeped into the American subconscious that I was 'stay the course'
How did that happen?

Andrew Sullivan's remarks:
Watching the president's press conference, we have finally gotten to see what happens when George W. Bush is forced to face reality. It wasn't pretty. He was prickly from the word go, defensive, and also revealing. He was trying to say (I think) that he had already decided to fire Rumsfeld last week, even as he was insisting that Rummy would stay for two more years. So Bush's own spin is that he was lying through his teeth last week. Good to have that confirmed in his own words.

Weird day, huh?

The official press conference transcript is out:
Q Thank you, Mr. President. Last week you told us that Secretary Rumsfeld will be staying on. Why is the timing right now for this, and how much does it have to do with the election results?

THE PRESIDENT: Right. No, you and Hunt and Keil came in the Oval Office, and Hunt asked me the question one week before the campaign, and basically it was, are you going to do something about Rumsfeld and the Vice President? And my answer was, they're going to stay on. And the reason why is I didn't want to inject a major decision about this war...

That does not make much sense to me. Perhaps Bush realized this later on, when he said he didn't want troops to think that the dropping & replacement of Rumsfeld was a "political" decision. That still does not make a lot of sense (how would replacing Rumsfeld before the elections be any more political than replacing him after your party gets trounced?) but it is at least somewhat coherent.

And so the only way to answer that question and to get you on to another question was to give you that answer.
Folks, Rummy has not stepped down, this is all a lie. Above it seems President is speaking, but read carefully, it is Rumsfield.

Dear Mr President
I still like you and if I have said so before, I'd like to thank you for everything that you do. Your job can't be an easy one with the many challenges you face daily, and now it's going to be a bit tougher. Whatever you do, stand strong, stand tall and stand your ground with Iraq.

Respectfully,
A loyal fan.
PS - Next time you have a televised press conference, you have my full permission to not be as nice as you were today in your attempt to tell them to kiss your ass.

It's amazing to see the libs reaction to all this. Bush finally accepts Rumsfelds 3rd resignation. Quite funny actually.
7 election cycles of defeat wiped out by a 6 year itch midterm election that resulted in a razor thin majority. The American people are watching.. I think this is all part of Karl Roves evil plan.

I was so happy to hear this news earlier today. I have seen the demon RumsFAILED once,on the 2nd aniversary of 9/11. HE just has this air about him... an arrogant @$$#013!

My take on Bush's lie is that he only planned on accepting the resignation letter if there was a change in congress. That and his mention of raising minimum wage. He is trying to show some concessions before he gets to the chopping block.

Interesting 'take.' But I believe that he had intentions to replace Rummi anyhow because Rummi was going to step down regardless. Rather than play "politically incorrect politics' before a mid-term election, they held off. Yes, I buy that reasoning. Even if it wasn't Bush's idea to let him go, I do believe Rummi saw the the writing on the wall and had plans of resigning.

PS - The Dems make the dangerous mistake of giving themselves too much credit.
