On the morning of August 6, 1945, Tibbets' crew dropped the bomb, code-named <A href="http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Little+Boy" linkindex="82">"Little Boy,"</A> over Hiroshima. More than 70,000 people were killed instantly. By the end of 1945, the death toll had reached about 140,000. Tibbets said in later interviews that though he was not proud of causing so much death, he did not regret his role in the bombing and believed the actions of his crew ultimately saved more lives than they took.
