vk2yoc says: The idea dates back to Einstein's explanation that spacetime can be deformed by large energies or masses. Since the Large Hadron Collider is a twenty-six kilometer ring of superconducting magnets designed to do nothing but give a particle as large an energy as possible, that sounds like it could be an issue. Small deformations in spacetime (like Earth) give us the force of gravity, severe deformations give the cosmological trash compacting black holes, and an extreme case could cause a wormhole - a link between two points as spacetime folds over to touch itself (no sniggering). Actually, I didn't say the above, it's a quote from the website, reading it again, it's a bit misleading. I just forgot the quotation marks. Einstien said it more or less like this, 'matter distorts space, and space tells matter where to go' This is what gravity is, a distortion in space, matter 'falls' down this distortion. The more mass an object has, the greater the distortion and the force of gravity is also greater. Einstein also said, more or less, 'that if an object having rest mass(not propagated at the speed of light) is accelerated up to the speed of light, then it's mass will become infinite and it's transit instantaneous.' I think that some people are worried that the Large Hadron Collider will accelerate particles up to so near the speed of light, that their mass will become so great, the distortion in space will destroy everything. I guess we'll find out soon. HOW TO BUILD A TIME MACHINE. Catch a wormhole. Anchor one end to a convenient spot. Fly the other end around for a while at near the speed of light, thus causing a time differential to the other end, then park it somewhere. Transiting the wormhole will take you forewards or backwards in time, depending on which way you travel. See it's really quite simple. You could also put one end near something with with tremendous mass, like perhaps an operating Large Hadron Collider. I think the excitement about the collider project in certain social circles well may exceed the excitement of anticipation on a space project like launcing a spacecraft. Science is about to become a substitute for religion. Some believe in a socalled big bang others may doubt the validity of such a theory. It appears that most scientists fail to see that what they are investigating is the result of a fairly complex way of interfering in the texture of the matter-space continueum, which leads to the assumption that what is being observed indeed also exists (ie. particles) not seeing that these observations are caused by their own methods of measuring. The LHC is an example of embodiment of a a... Just ask yourself, if you were in the position of power to push the button that will initiate the LHC. And you have heard that there are scientists that are concerned about the possilbe result, would you push it lightly? This is without any doubt an giant technological achievement that well may launch humanity into the unknown. I like the id that it will open up a stargate. But then again maybe nothing happens or perhaps nobody will even notice that it happened and we simply forget (again). Doesn't anyone realize how stupid this whole article is? The LHC will NOT even get close to the energies created during supernovas, star birth/death or the energies of cosmic rays that slam into our atmosphere and magnetosphere on a daily basis. Even super massive black holes are localized and only affect things within a certain radius. There are Hubble photographs of whole galaxies colliding and yet the universe still exists. Humanity's technology is far off from destroying the universe or even our own galaxy. We do however have the power to destroy ourselves and our planet but the LHC has nothing to do with that. While I won't foolishly claim that it could not destroy the universe (no one knows everything therefore no one can know) I think I'm on the safest of ground to point out that having the universe suddenly destroyed is far from the worst thing possible to imagine happening and in fact could be a super blessing in disguise. |
