In my experience, people who are unhappy (nowadays it is called 'emotional distress') and intellectually inadequate (and the two often go together, so that emotional and intellectual life are attributes of one concept) suffer from rigid thinking styles, a highly restricted number of cognitive strategies, and a range of similar orders (as opposed to disorders) that used to be called neurotic. The unfortunate individual thus described is interpellated by a culture which orders subjectivity in this way ideologically...

The unfortunate individual thus described is interpellated by a culture which orders subjectivity in this way ideologically so that we see, for instance, a dehumanising morality based on the virtues of mindless work, consumption, moral lego and so on, along with the concomitant hatred, moral condemnation and dread of healthy intellects, imagination, creativity and love. Approaches to enhancing individual liberty, happiness and human potential must begin way before the economic and utterly out of the orbit of the teleological.
