"The totalitarian phenomenon," observed the late French political philosopher Jean-Francois Revel, "is not to be understood without making allowance for the thesis that some important part of every society consists of people who actively want tyranny: either to exercise it themselves or--much more mysteriously--to submit to it. Democracy will therefore always remain at risk."

I think that the concept of "libertarian socialism" is an oxymoron to put it mildly. Unless its an attempt to create a dynamic balance between anarchism (which is what libertarianism really is) and scientific socialism (which also leads to a dystopian nightmare or totalitarian control).

Old Noam does raise some interesting thoughts, to bad so many people spend so much time and energy shouting him down.

True, I think he is brilliant, I probably spend too much time and energy trying to understand exactly what it is he is saying! (Knowing he is intellectually far superior, that is) In one instance, I would agree with your assessment on the phrase "libertarian socialism", on further thought as to what Noam meant, I am not so sure, again, something I am still pondering and attempting to understand.

The other part of this article that I found slightly humorous, was his statement "I was attracted to anarchism as a young teenager" perhaps it is typical teenage angst,(or in my case angst, and the Sex Pistols ) because that is when I first started to take notice of anarchism. I read the anarchist papers, various literary works, etc., though libertarianism is similar, they are not exactly one and the same. In my case at least, libertarianism is "anarchy matured". If that makes any sense.

From my understanding, I totally agree, there.

Sad, socialists are getting this kind of amplification, partly due to the web.
This country used to be stronger against the spread of this ideal.
There is a tie-in with the weakening of America overall. Not as in cause=effect, but that it is one of the slow creeping symptoms of the abandoning of America.
It has been allowed to creep in. More correctly - scripted in.

Chomsky is very passive-aggressive in his gestures and phrasings.
Always a double track to his communication if you clue-in.
