And in Maricopa County yet. This ought to get interesting what with the sheriff that makes inmates wear pink and live in tents. I do love the west, where they believe in enforcing the laws on the books!

"The family [believes they] have been shamed by her, not a crime, but
the name of the family has been degraded and news will get back to Liberia. And they're more concerned about that than the crime,"
Who would really agree that this sick attitude is worthy of the name "culture"?

Not me.

Culture: "patterns, traits, and products considered as the expression of a particular period, class, community, or population"

Sick it is, but it still fits the definition.

I also challenge the notion that you can call it a genuine 'community' when the status of half its people (women) is not one where they are considered equal in worth and value. Seems to me they are more like hostages.

"Community" does not necessarily mean just the warm, fuzzy image we tend to use it for. It's a group of people with shared values and morals. There's nothing in "community" that says they are GOOD ones.

Look, I am not engaged in a dictionary based legalese battle here, lol. In the words of the racist Boxer : "this is friendly" .

I am expressing my opinion about the language we use in relation to 'culture'. To me, any group, community, whatever-- that does not count its women as equal beings and allow them the freedom that comes with that---is NOT deserving of the same status and labels as ours.

I am not a fan of Relativism, is I guess what i am saying. I think our (western) culture is miles about anything they have shown so far. I do not consider this kind of barbaric mentality as being deserving of the term "culture" in the sense we generally mean it.

I am probably wrong on this in tec...

If you'll read my comments, I agree with you. As for the definitions, I'm simply clarifying terms in context of how they're being used. You and I are on the same page concerning the situation itself.

Why do they even bother leaving their own countries when they insist on bringing their ignorant and out-dated cultural ideas with them.

It is an ugly situation all around. As a mother, it is extraordinarily disturbing as to where the parents' priorities are.
