Mousie, my cynicism is coming out. I have a huge distrust of organizations who ask for money and claim to help people - they always seem to pocket most of the money and help just enough people to allow them to continue saying they help people.

As I read this article the only thing I keep seeing is "because of these students, children were freed of slavery". They had a goal of freeing 40 child slaves. Is there any proof that was met other than an arbitrary number generated saying "that will save 40 of them" and once reached they get a congratulations?

Yes, I want those children freed and I want anyone involved in slavery of any kind to meet a terrible punishment - but who are worse, the sla...

Oortcloud, I certainly understand your concern. Before I gave to any charity, I would be sure to check the financial records. Don't they have to disclose how much money they take in and where they spend it? Some "charities" use as much as 90% of the money for "administrative" tasks.

However, cynicism aside, there are charities out there that really do walk the talk. We just need to do the research to make sure our dollars are going somewhere they will actually do good.

I think most of today's kids are great, generous and wordly-aware (certainly my son and his friends here in the UK). I have a basic optimism about our future because of this. Thanks for a very important series of clips BNM.

My granddaughters school regularly has fund raisers to send money and clothing, books etc. to a school in Africa. In the past year they have had a choir from that school come here for a performance. The school was only one of many places they performed.

Tanya, that must be so neat for your granddaughters' school, to meet some of the kids they are helping, not to mention meeting kids from another culture.

It's good to see these children thinking of and trying to help others.

What was also nice was, the teacher who goes to the school in Africa on her holidays taught the children some songs in the African language so they could sing along.
