I switched to linux on the desktop years ago for exactly that reason. It was time to grow out of warez and piracy, but I couldn't yet afford the pricey apps I needed.

Open source desktop apps were just beginning to mature at that point, and it was fun finding free and open alternatives.

I'm not sure about the comparison of buying a computer pre-loaded as some form of piracy....
