Regardless of the content or movie, shouldn't teachers and schools be more judicious about what they show to 12 yr olds? Is any R-rated movie (or PG-13 for that matter) acceptable to be shown at school in a clasAnd people want to question "why" I homeschool and "if" I am competes of 12 yr olds? And without parental/guardian permission?

The grandfather mentioned religion, but this is more than being against the family's religion. Public schools across the country are failing to educate children with the basic skills. Our own local high school got a "D". And my state has a wonderful track record for giving high school diplomas to teenagers who can't even read.

How about focusing on the quality of education...and giving children the skills they need to become functional adults????

What good are recreational movies, cultural studies, diversity training, and sex ed (any type) if the graduates NEVER successfully integrate with society and become productive members of it?

I don't even watch R rated movies and I'm in my 30s. Garbage in - Garbage out.

It was a dumb move by the teacher. But what's $500K worth of trauma? I see obvious greed.

Aces to Aces. The teacher was obviously way out of line here. Obvious greed? Uh, yeah!

Nice move, willhelm, letting others do your thinking for you. Have you ever considered that there may be an "R" rated movie which may have some real value of thought which you are missing by your knee-jerk decisions? Certainly you are entitled to your actions as you see fit, but I can't imagine what such a parochial view must be like.

Yes, like teaching kids to accept that differnt people live differnt lives, that ignorance breeds hate (the moral of the movie), etc... Though I don't think the movie was appropriate for more 12 year olds, I don't think it would have been a big deal if:
a: a permission slip had been sent home (it's not on the curriculum, and it is a movie.. the teacher may have been breaking the law showing it to a large group.. classrooms don't qualify as private home viewing...)
b: the kids were educated before hand on homosexuality, and the fear/hate some feel towards them, is it right or wrong? who d...

Why do you presume to know me? You are completely ignorant about me ! If you want to get your education from R-rated movies, be my guest. But, spare the hatred spewed at me for wanting to keep my mind clear of the garbage that IS 80% of Hollywood. You want to stack your education up against me? fine. I'll put my degrees and personal education and studies up against your education of Schindler's List any day. I let NO ONE do my thinking for me and I resent your hat...

But that is absolutely not true. To wit:

I don't even watch R rated movies
Were I in fact completely ignorant about you, I wouldn't know that you don't watch R-rated movies.

Further, I know that you don't recognize the difference between hatred and an interrogatory. Were I to "spew hatred", in my estimation and understanding I would be directing declarative invectives of a highly charged emotional nature about you at you, not merely summing up factual statements you have made, unless you are in fact a member of CARA. Perhaps you are, an...

Bartendingbear, the stretch of your reasoning is phenomenal. I do not think you managed to put together 2 valid premises. I have nothing else to say. Your display says it all.

Hmmm. I know I shouldn't get in the middle of this, but...

BartendingBear's reasoning was clear, logical, and supported with direct quotes, supporting every single point he made!

A seasoned attorney couldn't have done better.

Perhaps that deep breath is in order.

A proposition is true when it corresponds to reality and when what it asserts is actually the case. Logic and correct thinking are not learned on Perry Mason and Matlock. Truth is not created, it is discovered. Also, epistemic projects like that of the Bartenders, and your acceptance of it, reveal a misunderstanding about what really should pass as valid arguments.

The bartenders arguments were not valid. There were no valid propositions. The only basis was his/her subjective opinion about the nature of my choices.

In any case, I never expect, nor do I attempt, to gain agreement. There was a time I attempted to gain clarity. That is increasing difficult in this irrational age.

I agree with Ann, the teacher was out of line. Sounds like the parents think the situation is a cash cow though, it's not like this kind of content is hard to find these days.

There was nothing in the movie that would disturb a 12 year old THAT much. It more likely pissed off the parents...
Regardless of what your views are on the morality of homosexuality (I DO NOT want to get into a debate about that), some people find this sort of thing extremely disturbing... Depends on the individual though.

I don't agree with the logic that you used to come to that conclusion. I think Will just meant that he doesn't watch indecent movies, and since obviously most 'R' rated movies are indecent, he usually doesn't watch them. Obviously this is not always the case. Facing the Giants got an 'R' rating, which was absolutely absurd. Apparently there was too much 'Religion' for their tastes.
Why do you presume to know me? You are completely ignorant about me !...
