The incidence of various disorders, including diabetes and obesity, are increasing throughout the Western world.
There has been no increase in total life span or longevity over the past century. Although we are managing to prolong the lives of many who are ill we are also becoming sicker earlier in life.
More people are spending a greater period of their lives suffering from one or more disabilities. This is not related to increased life expectancy.
There is a continuing increase in the per capita use of medical services - although more people are going to the doctor more often, they are becoming sicker in spite of reductions in smoking and increasing use of diet and exercise programs.
There continues to be an astonishing increase in the use of pharmaceutical products and prescription drugs - a fact which correlates with a deterioration in public health. The more drugs we take, the sicker we are becoming.
The incidence of iatrogenic diseases is increasing alarmingly and has now become the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer.

All of these are deaths per year due to iatrogenic causes!

12,000 -----unnecessary surgery
7,000 -----medication errors in hospitals
20,000 ----other errors in hospitals
80,000 ----infections in hospitals
106,000 ---non-error, negative effects of drugs

The real problem is due to our dependency on cures and man made drugs rather then prevention.

I fully support you in your decision to not see doctors, take medications or seek cures for yourself when you get ill. Good for you. Spread ...

I guess I don't understand what is irrational about any of this. We are talking about a patients right to information. Are you saying it is irrational to expect a doctor to explain a diagnosis. Is it irrational to expect your physician to take the time to answer questions regarding treatments. A person should be fearful if a doctor is unwilling to take the time needed for the patient to be fully informed. Or are you saying it is irrational concern that the cure may be worse then the disease or that the pharmaceutical they are taking may actually kill you. (Opps recall.)

Medication errors are among the most common medical errors, harming at least 1.5 million people every year, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. The extra medical costs of treating drug-related injuries occurring in hospitals alone conservatively amount to $3.5 billion a year, and this estimate does not take into account lost wages and productivity or additional health care costs.
Studies indicate that 400,000 preventable drug-related injuries occur each year in hospitals. Another 800,000 occur in long-term care settings, and roughly 530,000 occur just among Medicare recipients in outpatient clinics. The committee noted that these are likely underestimates.
This is simple people. Make your doctor explain, get second opinions. Do your own research.
