invictus says: Wiccans in the US are taking the government to court over its refusal to allow their symbol on gravestones in military cemeteries. If they were willing to fight and die for their country they deserve to have the symobl they believe in put on their tombstone. @usmc6531... I'm with you. After all, don't we fight to protect the right to worship our own religions? I'm with usmc and VT. Why is the symbol not allowed in the first place? I can see having some sort of guidelines to protect the dignity of the cemetery, but I hardly see how this is objectionable. Atheists can always be counted on to champion the rights of faux religions. Haven't you heard? There are no atheists in faux souls. Pretty good, K7, but I can't help but notice the similarity found in your humor and serious comment. The former based in mispronunciation, the latter, misperception, and both funny. We aim to please. You have a silent partner? Royal "We". --King7 ~ d e e p b o w ~ backing away slowy This story has been in the news on and off for some time now (1, 2). It's actually pretty fascinating for anyone interested in the role of religion in a pluralistic society. The military has a list of "emblems of belief" that are pre-approved for putting on veterans' headstones. You can see a copy of the list here. GD's "faux religions" to the contrary notwithstanding, there are lots of traditions there I'd honestly never heard of before, like the "Aaronic Order" and "Konko-kyo Faith." There's even one ... At least 8 other symbols have been approved since the first request 10 years ago. I wonder who the broken link is in this chain of fools? I'm really getting tired of the "Wicca" trend. Trend? It's a federally recognized religious faith. |
