A recent Gallup poll showed that 48% of Americans are in favor of increasing the number of troops in the country, while 45% are opposed. The biggest opposition to adding troops is among Democrats, where only 36% favor a surge, while 73% of the Republicans are in support.   If he decides on a strategy of escalation, Obama must work hard to earn the support of the American people.
