spirithiker says: This monk has dedicated his life to attaining something we in America take for granted: Democracy and basic human rights. The U.S. claims to be a stalwart of human rights and yet allows human rights atrocities to continue in Burma, Zimbabwe, Tibet, etc. and even writes its laws to allow a U.S.-based corporation to profit from it. Chevron, based in California, has been making huge profits in Burma as part owner of a natural gas project. U.S. sanctions prevent most U.S. companies from working in Burma, but Chevron's investment there existed before the sanctions were imposed and continues under a grandfather clause. This man, and many others, is willing to die to gain freedom for his fellow countrymen. Chevron and the U.S. is willing to let him die at the hands of a tortuous dictatorial regime in order to make a profit. How is this any different than the terrorism the U.S. is creating in Iraq and Afghanistan? After murdering villagers of ethic tribes their daughters are taken off to interior work camps reminiscent of Japanese "comfort women" (WW11) ,there are many camps of these refugees fled from Army sweeps through the interior, the Chinese are as complicit as you say is Chevron.Horrific stories of kids hands boobie trapped for those that fled to pick up on returning to smoldering ruins. The camps are in Nth W Thailand, forget their name they financed resistance from Opium trade once. The U.S. claims to be a stalwart of human rights and yet allows human rights atrocities to continue in Burma, Zimbabwe, Tibet, etc.Not to forget, Guantanamo. I don't think human rights abuse or torture are any hindrance for the oil men. If they are a-okay with Gitmo, then surely a few monks' fate, is of no concern to them. For their blood money sins careless they probably go to Church on Sunday oblivious of any thing but their bank A/c,s while the victims waste away their lives in gaol,, or worse. |
