Enlightening account of the relationship between Tolstoy & Gandhi

"In South Africa, Tolstoy's writings landed on the desk of a young Indian dissident, Mahatma Gandhi. He was overwhelmed, declaring that after reading Tolstoy his "lack of faith in non-violence vanished."

He hung a picture of Tolstoy on his office wall and named the camp where he trained activists in peaceful resistance Tolstoy Farm.

Gandhi wrote five letters to Leo Tolstoy and received four in return, all glowing with praise and intellectual exchange. In his last letter, written in September 1910 only weeks before his death, Tolstoy told Gandhi that his activity was "the most central and important of all the work now being done in the world."

Years later, Gandhi repaid the compliment, writing that he knew of no one "in India or anywhere else who has had as profound an understanding of nonviolence as Tolstoy had." Tolstoy had inspired Gandhi's legendary instruction to "be the change you want to see in the worl

"His argument was that if you do things the old way, by fighting, you're going to turn into what you hate."
Makes sense. The prove being very plain to see that the warmongers NEVER become peacemakers/peacelovers..

Following his assassination of Gandhi, [Nathuram Godse] was put on trial beginning May 27,1948. On November 8, 1949
Godse was sentenced to death for the killing. He was hanged at Ambala Jail on November 15, 1949, along with Narayan Apte,
the other conspirator.
Millions of Indians mourned Gandhi's assassination. Massive anti-Brahmin riots spread, especially across Maharashtra state, as Godse was a Brahmin. Sangli and Miraj regions were hit harder. Houses of Brahmins were burned, and a number of people died. The Maratha protagonists were largely supposed to be behind the arson. The Hindu Mahasabha was vilified and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the RSS, was temporarily...

If the old ways of fighting 'worked,' our society should have become more stable, but it is in a state of decay.
Somewhere there is an idea that progress involves destruction of the old, when there is still no idea what will be put in it's place. After the destruction, nothing is rebuilt.
There are other things that should change, which are left untouched, because it does not occur to us that things could be done any other way. We are often encouraged to avoid looking for alternatives.
Do I see what I am looking for in other people, in myself?
People can act on instructions, but they will follow observations.

* I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and Non-violence are as old as the hills. All I have done is to try experiments in both on as vast a scale as I could.
Mohandas Gandhi

* Whatever you do is insignificant, but it is important that you do it .

* I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.

All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love.

In the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.

Inspired!! Yes, Gandhi's teaching changed my life years ago. Let is not forget the "resistance" part of the non-violence. Gandhi also was affected by Thoreau writings on civil disobedience.
