Anomaly100 says: My italics. Reagan was admant about prosecuting torture, but also prosecuting inhuman treatment that some might claim was not full-on torture. Now go read National Review or The Weekly Standard. And look what has happened to conservatism in America. Of course, Reagan was not stupid enough to get caught torturing. That was what the Contras, Pinochet and Guatemalan right-wing death squads were for. Ever notice how Reagan always did his dirty work through proxies but almost never put forth any effort on his own? When 241 American servicemen were killed in the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings, all he did was lob a few shells at random targets and withdraw most of the rest of out troops. In 1986 he avenged the deaths of 180 Americans and 79 others on PanAm 103 by sending a 45 planes to Libya where they killed maybe 40 people (and scored a few grazing hits on the French embassy). His only real military adventure was sending a force of 10,000 (with 23 naval vellels in support) to Grenada. Jorjor: You certainly know your history on Reagan. To tell you the truth, if I said much on the subject, I'd look pretty pathetic next to you. I'm trying to catch up. I feel like an ass because I was overseas for 16 years, which was at the time you spoke of and my brain seems to have retained little on Reagan! I have some memory problems from an accident, but not THAT bad. I really didn't get in to politics until that last couple of years. It seems so selfish now. I'm interested in the Reagan years especially since his son, who seems to share the same views I do, seemed very upset by his father's actions in the Oval Office. I'd like to learn more, I just don't know where to start. Although I lived through the Reagan years (in 1985, the day after Reagan took the oath for his second term, I got laid off), my memories of the political situation were recently refreshed. A few weeks ago, I read "The Man Who Sold the World : Ronald Reagan and the Betrayal of Main Street America " by William Kleinknecht. Although the book is largely critical of Reagan, especially on the economic policies, he did go to some length to point out that Reagan was very reluctant to commit US troops, which he attributes to an unwillingness to feel responsible for their deaths. On the other hand (a point the author also acknowledges), this often led to the... Something went wrong with the link at the end of the last post. I won't try to repost it. You can recreat the list by going to http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First and do a subject search on "Reagan, Ronald" The list has 399 entries, and it's up to you to infer each item's bias from its title. They renge from the obsequiously fawning to the withering. It helps to reorder the list by date in descending order. When it was announced in 1994 that Reagan had Alzheimer's disease, my reaction was, "It took them this long to notice?" Interestingly, when he was confronted with concerns about his age in the 1980 campaign, he reacted by saying that if he started showi... Jorjor: I will look that up and I thank you for your help. That should narrow down my search for knowledge in the Reagan area quite a bit. I've always been interested, but as I said, it's hard to know where to start. And now I do. You are a font of information on this subject. Hey, I can stand on one leg and spin around!! Can YOU! I'm kidding of course. byw, It's odd what you said about Reagan's Alzheimer's disease. I thought Bush had it at one point, or was drinking. I saw some videos where he was waaayyy off. I wouldn't be shocked. I wouldn't wish it on anyone though. Anomaly, I started out professional life as a teacher and it seems I keep veering back in that direction from time to time. I can't stand on one leg (darned arthritis), much less spin around. More power to you. As for Bush's drinking, consider this: Earlier Jorjor: Your article from your link also mentioned the father/son problem's with Bush. I've heard this before and it's a damn shame that his father/son issues helped to start a war and invade a country that did NOT have WMD. His dry drunk problems don't seem to have helped either. I'm just very pleased that we have a sober and articulate man in the Oval Office. I've read things from the right wingnuts where Obama is actually criticized for his oratory skills! I guess it's desperation. |
