daisey74 says: whats next? So what if it is a recruiting tool! Some of these military academies in large cities that are sometimes called charter schools/magnet schools--are placed in schools in neighborhoods where students were failing, either classes or the end of the year test or showing no progress-- If the discipline that comes from a military academy helps these students turn their lives around--and stop failing and start succeeding in life, instead of dropping out, doing drugs, joining a gang--where's the harm. Maybe the student will discover there is more to life than just showing up--it takes effort, persistence & sweat! Another thought, somewhat related. As a teacher in the late 60's, early 70's and into the 80's, teachers lamented the lack of ambition, nay the lethargy displayed where rigorous study was required. At the time (listen for the big yowls) my fellow teachers and I thought that Israel had the right idea--require everyone to spend 2 years in the military or some civic project like the WPA or CCC doing work for their country. I've observed many a student after high school that entered the military and the amazing change wrought in that student--finally knew what he/she wanted to do or had learned a trade and became a productive citizen. What an absurd title and premise. The military was the best thing that ever happened to our middle son. Not true in all cases I'll grant you. The upcoming generation could use a little discipline, learned self-control, personal pride and the ability to defend their homes & Country. Heaven knows most seem to have the computer games, hoops, hip-hop, baby-making, mall loitering, texting, etc. down pretty good. They should also get the chance to decide, on their own, whether they want to join or not. Schools should not be turn into recruiting grounds. So....where would you put the "recruiting grounds"? Military service is an honorable occupation if the person serving is honorable. I don't think anyone forces anyone to participate in military service now...it's all voluntary. If fear of influencing young minds is a concern, we could write volumes of that very thing being done in many areas of controversy within our Country. |
