ramsesemerson says: "...hosting family reunions that include the descendants of the owners and the slaves." I would think that would be an awkward meeting. "...hosting family reunions that include the descendants of the owners and the slaves."There is an odd phenomenon that occurs here in Charleston. Perhaps other places as well. Charleston SC was once the scene of unspeakable hardships for blacks and women. Today, despite a long suffering past, Charleston "is" what we make it. People of all kinds reach out for their ancestry. They want to know about and come to terms with their family history good or bad. Now if my family were slave owners...and your family were slaves...and we met up at a function or gathering today...would there be animosity? No. For you are not a slave and I am not a slave-driver. T... The problem is that people are petty. For example, some people whose ancestors were slaves are trying to get reparations from the government, even though the government no longer practices or condones slavery (in the strictest sense of the word anyway). On the other side, there's the KKK. The truth is that slavery was a lucrative business and some of the ancestors of slaver owners may wish it still existed. People never forgive and forget. |
