What form is this "punishment" taking? Gingrich seems to conveniently forget Bush walking hand-in-hand with then-Prince (now Saudi King) Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz or Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein. He forgets Nixon in China and Reagan and Gorbachev in Reykjavik. He's tricky, though. Note that he got his two divorces and remarriages out of the way BEFORE becoming Catholic. From reading it, I'm guessing that the "bowing" and the handshake and the unspecified acts of appeasement are the punishment. Gingrich seems unable to tell the difference between "engagement" and "appeasement". A country can talk to another country and try to negotiate their differences or they can go to war, kill a lot of people, destroy a lot of property and shatter spirits on both sides, then negotiate a peace treaty. Either way, they end up at the conference table. Isn't it better to skip the war and just go to the table first? Of course, the war usually boosts the winner's economy and industry and has the added benefit of population control. That's very good ... |
