While sexual violence has accompanied warfare for millennia and insecurity always provides opportunities for criminal elements to profit, what is happening in Iraq today reveals how far a once progressive country (relative to its neighbors) has regressed on the issue of women's rights and how ferociously the seams of a traditional Arab society that values female virginity have been ripped apart.

How can women do that to their own daughters? What is going to be done with the information?

When you've been told all your life that you are worthless and have no value because you are female, you would have no reason to think that your daughter has value... after all, she's female too.

I hate that dystopian feminist writers like Margaret Atwood and Sheri Tepper are able to draw more from reality than from their imaginations.

This story would preserved completely different if it read “Iraq’s unmistakable crime, Mothers Pimping their cars”

ooops, meant to type this first: Not to reduce the seriousness of this story. But don’t you find it strange that today that a word such as ‘pimp’ has positive connotations?

The root-cause of this is: (1) the illegal/oppressive war. (2) the installation of distorted (not the real) Islam in Iraq by colonial powers, in order to easily control the region by installing puppet leaders under the impression that the govts. are "islamic".
The reality is that the govts. are anything but Islamic.
You might consider doing a little research on the issue of rights of women in Islam versus the rights of women in the "muslim" world.
