I was actually very impressed with the way facebook is handling this. I had to specifically opt-in to the public searching. They're not just turning it on by default for all users from what I can gather. Good to know, thanks. They put a new window at the top of your profile with info about the new public profiles, and a link to take you to your privacy settings so you can opt out. Think the default privacy setting when I registered was to allow everyone to see your profile. It took me seconds between updating my status to "considering whether or not I want to be googleable" and unticking the box the makes me visible to search engines. Well that's good that they're not turning it on by default. I don't have a Facebook. I never would. To be clear, they are turning google search on by default. But they notify you on the homepage feed with a link to your privacy settings where you can opt out. |
