Why, in the history of tracking criminals was it ok, worked perfectly fine, to go through normal channels to obtain a wiretap but now it is so important that these laws be changed? Are "they" not still seeking criminals? Why the urgency? What changed? Because the criminal has become the TERRORIST? So what.

Those who want this change, encourage and embrace it are blind. They are unable to see the reasons behind not changing it. Basic freedoms being stripped away because someone(s) in government has become paranoid. Reason has become lost and paranoia is now what controls our lives. What happened to "don't let them scare you", "live your lives as you should...

You want to call it paranoic - why don't you check with 9/11 victims' families and see if they share your opinion that it's just paranoia. Nothing happened to "don't let them scare you", but there are smart ways of doing things and dumb ones, like saying to yourself "I'm not scared! I'm not scared!" - this statement alone will go a long way in protecting you. Right? I highly doubt it. And we do live our lives as we should, nobody walks outside and quickly runs from tree to tree... but you have to be completely ignorant to think that pre 9/11 environment is still with us today. We lost 2 buildings, 3000+ fellow US citizens, countless tears of their loved ones and many others and had a devastating (although luckily not lethal) blow to the economy. The laws that were on the books before didn't prevent this from happening. There were some legitimate and illegitimate reasons why - but they didn't!

You can beat your chest all day long and chant that you won't do squat to change anything, just use the comment "I won't let the terrorist win by giving in"... in reality that won't get you far... in fact it won't get you anywhere.
