La mayor parte de los poemas estaban escritos en latín aunque unos cuantos lo estaban en una mezcla de latín y alemán, e incluso con algunas palabras francesas. Sus autores eran clérigos que llevaban una vida licenciosa y desordenada y se inspiraron tanto en composiciones populares contemporáneas, con frecuencia groseras, como en las cultas de Homero, Cátulo y Ovidio.
