I'm wondering if this administration will go down in history as one that was "brazen" and "maverick" as far as defining what the executive branch can do unilaterally, taking a positive spin on their criminal deeds. A previous clipper posted an article that compared this administration to one of the first presidencies of the nation (Jefferson or Jackson, I don't remember, sorry) and the article was kind of disturbing in that respect. Yes, those guys in the early days had to do a lot of things on the fly and push the envelope... but I think we're a little past that these days, especially when it comes to restricting the freedoms of American citizens for "our safety."

GWB is obviously worried about the number of people that think they're smarter than him. There's been too much education already. He's just using the lamest excuse he can. Behaving unethically for the sake of the people. Why ? Because too often in the past they got away with it. Times Change

The unfortunate thing is that these sorts of precedents are very hard to shake off once they're set. Look at the decision to go to war in Iraq -- that was made much more likely by the War Powers Act. Anyhow, I think the conservatives are going to be wondering about the wisdom of the USA PATRIOT act once there is a liberal in office -- and it will happen again some day, that's just the way it goes. Governments, left or right, don't easily give up newly-gained powers once they've gotten used to them.
