I listened to this book on audio and it was, without a doubt, one of the best stories I've listened to/read in a long, long time. And it's not about rape; it's about Afghanistan, it's culture, and two boys' relationships. It's about loyalty, human affection blended with the culture and traditions of one's Country. It haunted me. There is no way that the directors can not re-do the scene in such a way as to protect the sensibilities and fears of the family and still remain true to the original story. For years Hollywood was able to leave things to our imagination and it never destroyed the quality of the story. With all the garbage out there that is promoted as quality entertainment, surely this story can be salvaged. This one could actually deserve to win an Oscar.

I disagree. It would be disrespectful to the author to leave that scene out, this is why liturature is far more better than film, because what authors could put on pages, directors would be shuned for putting on the big screen. It is a vital scene in the book. The turning point. I'm sure they will figure something out that wont be so scaring for the child. Hollywood is creative.

kierstynr...I agree with your reasoning. However, the fear was for the family and the reaction of their neighbors and countrymen. They could be endangered. Just wondering if a graphic depiction of the scene is necessary to communicate the storyline.
