disenchantedcitizen says: In the Senate, both parties have outsourced health care legislation to six Finance Committee lawmakers. The group recently announced it is rejecting essential provisions like a public insurance option that surveys show the public supports. Meanwhile, seven mostly Southern House Democrats have been threatening to use their Commerce Committee votes to gut any health care bill, regardless of what the American majority wants. This, however, isn’t about the majority. These lawmakers together represent only 13 million people, meaning those speaking for just 4% of America are maneuvering to impose their health care will on the other 96% of us. Census figures show these politicians represent exactly the kinds of districts whose constituents would most benefit from universal health care. So why are they leading the fight to stop—rather than pass—reform? Because when tyranny mixes with legalized bribery, constituents’ economic concerns stop mattering. Thanks to our undemocratic system and our corrupt campaign finance laws, the health care industry doesn’t have to fight a 50-state battle. It can simply buy a tiny group of congresspeople, which is what it’s done. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, health interests have given these 13 members of Congress $12 million in campaign contributions—a massive sum further enhanced by geography. Politicians trade favors for re-election support—and the best way to ensure re-election is to raise money for TV airtime (read: commercials). In rural America, that airtime is comparatively cheap because the audience is relatively small. Thus, campaign contributions to rural politicians like the... name them, shame them. Write articles, letters and stories. Make sure history remembers them for the fuckers they are. That clip must rank as one of the top 10 stupidest clips of all time. Defend your claim willhelm. Are you still clinging to quaint notions of the American deal? Do you still believe that the US is a functioning democracy? Eight years of Bush/Cheney should have told you that idea is leaving us. Now Obama’s ‘change’ is further butchering the American ideal. There was a time when politicians actually stood for what the American people wanted and actually followed through on their oath to serve the American people. Now they only serve their vested interests. They swear their allegiance to the almighty dollar and do the bidding of corporate lobbyists because they know that voters don’t really have any power and that they are easily manipulated come election time. Politicians trade favors f... Do you still believe that the US is a functioning democracy?I really do not want to get into the sheer idiocy of the clip. I'll just respond to America being a democacy. America was never intended to be a pure democracy. If you've ever read the founders you would know that they recognized democracy as very problematic. They placed us as far over toward the anarchist end of the spectrum as they could. Just enough to allow the use of democracy to elect our representatives. We are a Republic, A Representative Republic. Not technically a democracy. Nor shall we be or should we want to be. But, beside that, the clip is just a pile of crap. Who has the quaint notions now? That clip is accurate, but with your arsehole glasses, I'm sure it looks bass-ackward to you Willhelm the Chickenhearted. Democracy is something that was enshrined into the American Constitution. Anything less is unAmerican... like you. Willhelm, I understand that we, the public, don’t get to vote on every item that comes before congress. The gist of the clip is that those that have been elected to represent us are favoring profit-making corporations that place their own interests above the health and welfare of the general public. Not everyone can be fortunate enough to have the best healthcare available to them under the current system. These so-called representatives know this is true and yet they are doing whatever they can to hang-on to this current system despite what the public wants. And this, my friend, makes them an enemy to the publics’ well-being. Government by the people, for the people. That is the quaint notion I hold hope for. Willhelm obviously favours people playing political and corporate games with his health and welfare. First sign of a masochist. While you may deserve the corporate hell you endorse, Willhelm, the Chickenhearted, the rest of Americans don't. |
